The Town Engineering Department is responsible for the design and review of civil engineering construction projects throughout the Town. These projects range from water, sewer and drain construction to roadway construction and site development. We also maintain the Town's maps including the Assessor's maps , DPW's master sewer, water, and drain maps, review and comment to the various Boards and Committee's concerning public and private projects proposed throughout the Town.
ROADWAY PAVING
During 2008, the following roads received traditional asphalt pavement. The work included grinding off the top 1-1/2 inches and replacing with 1-1/2 inches of asphalt. Miscellaneous work including manhole cover replacements, new asphalt curbing, improved sidewalk accessibility and pavement markings were also part of the work.
- Dean Street - Neponset Street to Route 1
- Winslow Ave - Walnut Avenue to Hoyle Street
- Berwick Place - Nichols Street to Walpole Street
- Access Road - Neponset Street to Gate 1 driveway at Norwood Memorial Airport
- Pleasant Street - Sunset Avenue to Basic Rental
- Westover Parkway - House #31 to House #43
- Garfield Avenue - Pleasant Street to Adams Street
- Lyman Place - Adjacent to the Norwood Civic Center
The following roadways were paved with a process known as Micro-Surfacing. This paving alternative is approximately 1/2 of the cost of traditional paving, however, it can only be installed on roadways that are not to far along in their life span. The process involves the installation of a 3/8" surface to the existing pavement. The final product is a very smooth surface that extends the useful life of the road by 6 - 10 years. Prior to the installation of the new surface, crews filled all cracks with a crack filler and adjust any manhole covers that are too high or too low.
- Chatham Road
- Orleans Road
- Oakleigh Road
- Pembroke Road
- Norwich Road
- Malvern Road
- Yarmouth Road - Devon Road to Malvern Road
Also, the following parking lot projects were completed:
- Callahan School parking lot
- Norwood Memorial Airport parking lot
- William Shyne Circle parking lot (located at the Norwood Housing Authority complex at Fulton Street and Nahatan Street)
During the upcoming 2009 construction season, an equally aggressive roadway paving and parking lot reconstruction project is anticipated.
ATHLETIC FIELDS
The Norwood Field Committee has been the driving force behind the upgrade of the athletic fields throughout Town in order to provide quality, safe playing surfaces for all users. Since 2002, the Town of Norwood has invested a considerable amount of time and money to upgrade the following fields:
- Oldham School - New rectangular and new Little League fields (2002)
- Cleveland School (lower) - New softball field (2002)
- Willett School - New Babe Ruth Field (2004)
- Jean Brown Field (Cleveland School upper) - (2007)
- Ellis Ave. Ballfield Complex (commenced in Fall of 2008)
- Coakley Middle School Rectangular Field adjacent to school building (2008)
During the Summer of 2009, pending Town Meeting approval, the next field project will be the renovation of the ballfield located at the Callahan School. The existing field area will be upgraded to a rectangular field with the following improvements:
- New, state of the art, irrigation system with time clocks and rain sensor equipment
- New grassed surfaces
- Relocated paved play area for school and neighborhood children
- New backstop for neighborhood pick up games
Reconstruction of the Ellis Avenue ballfield complex commenced in the Fall of 2008. The finished product will be the site of a softball field and 2 - 6 vs. 6 soccer fields. Due to a rainy fall, work was stopped and will restart in March/April of 2009. The final ballfield will have the following improvements:
- New, state of the art, irrigation system with time clocks and rain sensor equipment
- New grassed surfaces
- Improved field drainage
- New backstop
- New dugout areas
UNIVERSITY AVENUE WATERMAIN CONSTRUCTION
During the Summer and Fall of 2008, the MWRA installed a 36 inch diameter watermain on University Avenue, from Canton Street to Route One and along Route One from University Avenue to the Norwood/Westwood Town Line. The work is part of the MWRA's master plan to provide Norwood, and other MWRA communities, with a redundant water supply.
The watermain work and temporary trench paving has been completed. In the Spring of 2009, the contractor will return to install the permanent trench pavement.
