Commission on Disability

Mission Statement
Many towns have disability commissions that focus on advising and saint local officials with compliance to federal and state disability laws and assist local disability advocates with technical assistance, advocacy, and other disability-related meters. Norwood, for many years, had a very active commission on disability which primarily focused on architectural access-related issues. We are now looking to reengage a commission on disability to specifically focus on other areas such as community outreach and education on neurodiversity, deaf and blind challenges, disability disaster preparedness, and training for both municipal and other entities on serving populations with disabilities with a specific focus on neurodiversity and blind/deaf awareness at varying levels. Architectural access will still be a concern, of course; however, changes to building codes and municipal facilities in the last few decades have greatly enhanced architectural access. Commission members can be from anywhere in the community, though it is recommended that commissions on disabilities maintain a proportion of individuals on the commission who are themselves disabled. Advocates and family members are encouraged to seek a spot as well.
