The Jimmy Fund of the Dana Farber Cancer Institute has long been the favorite charity of the Boston Red Sox, the Norwood Police Department, and the Massachusetts Chiefs of Police Association. Aside from special fundraising events, we conduct an ongoing canister drive with the gracious participation of many of the merchants in Norwood.  When you see the canister on the counter or next to the register, please drop in your change (maybe even some folding money).  It does make a difference.  You will be helping to stamp out cancer in children.  As you can see we've been at this for a long time:

At a September 2004 luncheon of the Bosox Club, the Norwood Police presented a check for $5,000 to the Jimmy Fund.  Pictured above are Lieut. Brian Murphy, Officer John Gover, Red Sox legend Johnny Pesky, and Officer Paul Murphy.

If you would like to participate by having a canister at your business please call Officer Bob Baker at 762-6888 or email him at   zim_02081@yahoo.com

A couple of years ago, it was learned that the "Jimmy" for whom the Jimmy Fund was so named back in the early 1950's, was alive and well and living in Maine. "Jimmy" was, in his private life Einar Gustafson, who survived and led a full and productive life because of Dr. Farber and the miracles made possible by his research.  Because cancer in children was an overwhelming challenge back in the early fifties, most people took for granted that "Jimmy" had not survived.  What a great story it was when the Dana Farber Cancer Institute introduced us all to Einar.  Sadly, Einar passed away just recently, but not until he made his mark for a second time.  In the picture at right Einar watches as patient Jason Adams is greeted by Ted Williams.  Click here to read about the real Jimmy .
