Status:            FLSA Non-Exempt, Full Time 40 hours/week, 7:00am-3:30pm

Salary:            FY20 Grade PW6 with CDL Salary range $26.30/hr. – $31.98/hr.

 

Duties: The purpose of this position is to install, remove and repair Automated Meter Reading (AMR) units, recondition water meters, perform water sampling and, to respond to customer requests; all other related work as required. 

Essential Functions:*

  • Observes and records meter readings in homes and business establishments for billing purposes; ensures AMR units are working properly; investigates abnormal consumption readings; notifies superior of situations requiring special attention.
  • Investigates faulty meters and AMR’s, repairs meters and installs new meters and AMR’s; operates metal detector in specific problematic situations; responds to homes with frozen pipes; locates service boxes.
  • Assists the DPW Administration Manager in coordinating the annual and semi-annual testing of water backflow devices in accordance with MassDEP Cross Connection Control Program Regulations - 310 CMR 22.22. Will also perform cross connection surveys when required.
  • Removes old or malfunctioning meters.  Tests, repairs, and calibrates meters to ensure accurate recording of consumption.
  • Removes and replaces failing AMR units at existing sites and installs new AMR units on new construction. Removes existing AMR units prior to building demolitions.
  • Inputs AMR information on site to system computer and syncs information to Billing Department software.
  • Assists technicians in troubleshooting Digital Collection Units (DCU) which receive information from AMR’s.
  • Assists maintenance and construction crews with installation and repair of water services and grounds work. 
  • Installs hydrant meters at construction sites to record water usage for billing.
  • Performs weekly water sampling at various locations for water quality assurance in accordance with standards established by MassDEP Drinking Water Program.
  • Maintains adequate levels of metering equipment and related supplies and informs supervisor when reordering is necessary.
  • Installs and tests new meters to ensure accurate readings.  Performs routine meter repair/maintenance functions.
  • Participates in all phases of snow and ice removal operations.
  • Coordinates with other departments or private contractors. Assists other DPW divisions as necessary.
  • Performs similar or related work as required, directed or as situation dictates.

 

Requirements:*

  • High school education; additional mechanical training helpful; and four years of related meter reading/installation/repair experience; or any equivalent combination of education and experience..
  • Certified Operator – Water Distribution License D1, Possession of a valid Class B CDL.
  • MassDEP approved Cross Connection Surveyor certification within one (1) year of hiring.
  • Participation in the Town’s mandated drug and alcohol random testing program.
  • Thorough working knowledge of meter reading/installation/repair procedures and methods.  Knowledge of plumbing practices.  Knowledge of installation and repair of new AMR system.. 
  • Capable of performing cross connection surveys when required.
  • Mechanical ability to disassemble and repair meters.  Ability to recognize meter defects, abnormal registrations, and incorrect or improper readings.  Ability to work independently. Ability to carry out oral and written instructions.  Ability to follow proper methods, procedures and safety precautions.  Aptitude for numbers and details.  Ability to operate hand-held data recorder.
  • Prior municipal DPW water experience is a plus.
