 In accordance with the union contract the following notice of vacancy will be posted for five (5) days:

 Title:              TEMPORARY Motor Equipment Operator/Laborer I – CDL

Department:  Public Works, One Lyman Place, Norwood

Status:            Full time temporary, 40 hours non-exempt – 7:00am-3:30pm

Salary:            Grade PW4 $22.31/hr, $23.56/hr with CDL

 

Duties:* The purpose of this position is to perform skilled manual work of a difficult and responsible nature in the operation of public works equipment of substantial weight and complexity; all other related work as required.

This is a temporary posting. It is expected that the position will be filled until May 1, 2020.

This is a non-benefits eligible position.

 

 Essential Functions:*

Highway/Parks

 

  • Assists with street maintenance and repair projects by performing manual work and operating division equipment including sanders, asphalt roller, bobcat, dump trucks with plows, packer-trucks, tractor-mowers, etc.
  • Utilizes other highway equipment such as jackhammer, woodchipper, hand tools, and sod cutter.  Examples of projects include the following: constructing and repairing streets, roads, sidewalks, manholes, catch basins and drainage systems.
  • Applies pavement markings and paint; raking, dumping, spreading, grading, and rolling of asphalt, gravel, stone, and any other material for streets, roads and sidewalks; repairing damaged curbing, guardrails, street signs.
  • Plows snow and sanding and salting streets, parking lots and sidewalks; sweeping streets; mowing grass, cutting/trimming/chipping brush and trees, removing leaves; mowing the roadside; repairing and replacing turf; collecting and disposing of yard waste; and other maintenance, care, upkeep, repair, marking and beautification projects of streets, parking lots, and other town property.
  • Inspects and prepares equipment for safe and proper operation prior to beginning work for the day; performs light maintenance on equipment, which includes refueling and refilling lubricants; cleans vehicles and mounted equipment upon completion of assignments; secures vehicle after use.
  • May operate vehicles and equipment in lower classifications as needed or assigned to complete division or departmental projects or workload.
  • Monitors immediate environment and work area to ensure the safety of operator, other workers, the equipment, and the public. Obeys all traffic laws and safety guidelines.
  • Performs dispatcher duties and unskilled repair duties on equipment, streets and other situations in an emergency.
  • Assists other DPW divisions as necessary. 

 

 

Requirements:*

High school graduate; qualifying experience in the operation of heavy and special equipment; or any equivalent combination of education and experience. Special Requirements include the possession of a valid C.D.L. and participation in the Town’s mandated drug and alcohol random testing program. Ability to work shift hours and be reliable.
