The Street Opening Permit is required for any work being done in the public way. The contractor must complete and submit the application which is then reviewed by DPW staff. In addition to the permit, the contractor must have a current Certificate of Liability Insurance and $25,000 bond on file with the Public Works Department. The cost of the permit is $100 payable to the Town of Norwood.

The Trench Permit is required for excavators persuant to MGL c. 82A and 520 CMR 7.00. The law was enacted to protect the general public from inherent dangers surrounding trenches. A trench permit must be completed and approved by DPW staff prior to any work being done. This permit is required for:
- An excavation which is narrow in relation to its length, below the ground surface in excess of 3 feet below grade, the depth of which is greater than the width, but the width of the trench, as measured at the bottom is not greater than 15 feet.
When submitting the completed permit, the excavator is also required to provide a Certificate of Insurance with general liability coverage of $100,000 per person and $300,000 per claim.
